1. French redneck

Redneck was the closest English word I could find to translate beauf, but it does not fully express the feelings behind that word. Beauf is the shortened version of beau frère, which means brother in law.

In France, we always imagine your brother in law like the type of person with mullet hair who is doing barbecues every weekend, who drinks beers the whole time and has a huge beer belly, who is passionate about pimp my ride… 

Beauf is hard to explain, but I really think that the movie “Les Tuches” perfectly illustrates the concept. This movie is about a beauf family that wins the lottery and joins the rich people circle, but still has all of its beauf habits. You can click here to see the see the trailer.
